Is Opposition to Eureka Math and Common Core really limited to a few isolated troublemakers, like John White told the American Press?

Recently John White made the claim that only a few isolated pockets of parents in a few parishes are upset about Common Core and Eureka Math.

Small groups of people in several isolated areas of Louisiana, including Calcasieu Parish, are voicing loud opposition to Common Core State Standards, said state Superintendent of Education John White.

“They tend to show up at school boards in numbers that are not large relative to the size of the parish,” White told the American Press editorial board Tuesday. “But they’re large relative to the size of the room where the school board meeting is held.”

I’ve been getting reports from folks from across the state since that statement was made. I would like to put together a spreadsheet/inventory of just how widespread opposition truly is, but I need your help. Please provide information so I can counter John White’s claim that only a few folks from a few isolated communities are upset about Common Core and Eureka Math. My pastor actually made an offhand reference about Common Core Math during one of his sermons a few weeks back and was met with a room full of groans of disgust and frustration. What was remarkable was most of the folks in this service were not parents, but just grandparents, and they had had enough of Common Core. This was not an assembly of gathered for any other reason except to worship, but Common Core, and the math associated is so dreadful it provokes groans of disgust from an entire congregation. I attend church in the middle of Baton Rouge. I’m pretty sure this hatred is thorough and not the least bit isolated.

To help me document this for mainstream media types which don’t have the time or inclination to do this research themselves, please provide what curriculum you use in your parish. If there is organized resistance to it, let me know. If there is a contact person or name you would like to provide, please let me know that as well. I will update this list/post periodically as information comes in. I hope this post will also help connect groups in different “isolated areas of Louisiana” feel less isolated and work together going forward.

Please provide your feedback in the comments below. I will transfer summarized data to this spreadsheet. If you wish to be contacted by folks that might research this topic please leave your contact information in your comment as well. if you wish to provide an anonymous update please send your info to crazycrawfish@yahoo.com

  1. thank you. Anyone wishing to provide an update on their parish please do so in the comments. I will transfer summarized data to spreadsheet but if you leave e-mail addresses anyone else researching this topic can then contact you and verify your story and that you are not just an isolated, sore-loser, troublemaker, like John White has claimed you are.

  2. Calcasieu parish…along with core knowledge is ldoe guidebooks….several books have been pulled and deemed inappropriate…leaving some grades without books to choose from….many teachers going back to GoMath and Reading Street curriculum because they are tired of trying to force a failing curriculum to work….reports of some pro cc schools that allow students to take a math test multiple times to get the desired percentage to show Eureka is working….some pro cc teachers are telling students if we don’t do eureka that they will remove all technology from the schools and only have pencil and paper…..parents from pro cc schools are intimidated to speak out in fear their children will be mistreated….

  3. Terrebonne is requiring Eureka grades 3 and up. Some elementary schools chose Eureka k-3 some are using envision math K-3 it was Principal discretion what they are using. There is no organized group attempting to get rid of Eureka yet. There is a group that has hosted anti-common core meetings. Not sure ago the contact is for that. Lots of angry parents voicing frustration online about Eureka math and complaining to teachers.

    1. Can you give me the specific curriculum chosen in St Charles for math or ELA? All Parishes are required to use Common Core because of BESE, the legislature, John White and Bobby Jindal – because of Jindal’s recruitment of John White and the BESE members that support him.

  4. Ascension Parish is using Eureka/Engage New York Math. The superintendent is pro-common core and pro- Eureka math. Teachers know it’s not working and parents do too.

  5. St Tammany using Eureka/Engage NY math, phasing out this year, discontinue for next year after MANY parent complaints. School board anti common core. I wonder, even with phase out, where my child will get the info he should have for this year and prep for 4 the grade next year.

      1. We use Eureka/Engage NY for Math in Vermilion. Upper grades use Engage NY for Reading/Language 5-8. Lower grades use Reading lesson plans developed by Vermilion Parish curriculum department staff. I’m unsure of where they get their material/how they developed it. Could be based on another curriculum and formatted to fit for Vermilion parish.

  6. Thank you so much for doing this!!! I have 4 children in the school and one who graduated 3 years ago. The Central Community Schools are not yet using the CC curriculum in totality, particular the math. We , however, know that it is just a matter of time. We have a great school board and superintendent that are anti common core for the most part. Many of them recently attended a forum in our church to be more educated. John White is so out of touch with reality and his own community and state!!

    1. It’s not really John White’s community or state. He is here for the 275k salary and facetime and position title.

Thanks for writing. I am doing research for an Op ed piece as well as providing a resource for parents and activists to contribute to and share.

  7. You did have Vernon Parish, but you may have put VP information on Vermillion. Vernon is Eureka and there is strong FB opposition to the present
    Common Core Curriculum.

  8. I live in Desoto Parish and my 1st and 4th graders are both using Bridge in Mathematics 2nd Edition. 1st grader is also using Units from LDE and I can’t confirm if this is “The Story of Units” from Eureka or not. I can’t seem to find any website that compares Bridges to Eureka Math, but my 4th grader was working on problems that we only found assistance with on the Eureka Math website. Both children are using ELA Guidebooks and 1st grader is also using Superkids.
